The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in the Ashanti Region says, about 240,000 pre-paid meters are currently in the system
Collins Manu, the Public Relations Officer for ECG in the Ashanti Region made this revelation in an interview with Alfa Ali on the Orange Sunrise on Wednesday, October 13, 2021.
‘‘For pre-paid meters in the system, at the last count before covid, we deployed around 240,000 roughly’’.
According to the ECG,it is unable to distribute more meters due to primary challenge with procurement. The ECG, is, therefore, urging users of the post-paid meters to settle any debt they owe.
”That has to do with some challenges with procurement which I cannot divulge the challenges right now. the most important thing is right now if you are a post-paid customer and you owe, please come and make payment”.
It further explained that, even though pre-paid meters have been deployed to replace the post-paid ones, not every house, particularly the compound houses have installed the meter. Going after such customers sometimes results in violence he added
‘‘We are deploying a lot of pre-paid projects in the system. Not all the places are being filled with pre-paid mete. Those customers are the ones that mostly we have to go on them. Particularly those in compound houses, before they pay their payment bit by bit, sometimes there is even fight.”
“But what we know is that we take the power from a supplier which we have to pay every month. We must also get the money to be able to pay our suppliers so that we be in business to continue providing you with safe quality and reliable electricity’’. Mr. Manu stated.
The ECG hopes to reach every house with the prepaid meter as the meters are still being deployed.
